Odd Future Mountain Dew Ad Pulled After Perceived Racism & Violence Against Women

Original Story A 60 second Mountain Dew commercial has reportedly been pulled from broadcast. The advertisement features members of Odd Future, and was directed by the group front-man Tyler, The Creator. The ad depicts a battered woman with police trying to make an identification of a suspect from five Black men and a goat.

It is the third among several ads the PepsiCo used Tyler to direct. Having recently released his sophomore studio album, Wolf, Tyler also produces the Adult Swim show Loiter Squad.

After controversy regarding the advertisement's implied racism and violence against women, several voices have spoken out, including author and economist Dr. Boyce Watkins, who deemed it "arguably the most racist commercial in history." Ad Week investigated, and now that a PepsiCo rep has confirmed that the advertisement is being pulled from television spots and online.

"We understand how this video could be perceived by some as offensive, and we apologize to those who were offended," the unnamed rep told the magazine. "We have removed the video from all Mountain Dew channels and have been informed that Tyler is removing it from his channels."

This follows the removal of a Reebok ads featuring Hip Hop star Rick Ross, after the rapper recorded a recent song that was perceived as condoning rape against women.
