Emmett Till Family Spokesperson Says Lil Wayne's Apology "Falls Short"

Yesterday morning (May 1), a letter was published—believed to be authored by Lil Wayne, apologizing to the family of Civil Rights figure Emmett Till for his lyrics. On Future's "Karate Chop (Remix)," Wayne rapped that he "beat the pussy up like Emmett Till," referring to the 1955 beating and subsequent murder of a Mississippi teenager for allegedly flirting with a White woman.

Hours after the public letter published, a spokesperson for the Till family and Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation said that it was not much of an apology at all.

Airickca Gordon-Taylor, Executive Director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and Till's cousin told TMZ.com, "While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,' this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned." Previously, Taylor had spoken out against Wayne, criticizing his racial "pride and dignity," regarding the insensitivity of the lyrics.
